Portraits - Thomas' Shoot
I will be posting photos from portrait sessions on this page and try to explain a little about who we are photographing and share details about the photo shoot. This page will have more of a blog feel then a typical static web page. I am doing this to show some of our sports portrait work and to share a little about the techniques, tools and and approach used to create the photograph. If you, or if you know someone looking to have a sports portrait created, I would like to hear from you.
These portraits are of my son, Thomas. He cringes every time I get out my camera and say "Hey, I have this idea I want to try out...." Somehow I managed to convince him to help me out for a few minutes. I took these as a proof of concept, to work out specific details with the the composition, lighting and post processing techniques.
The setup was fairly simple. I had two light stands positioned on either side of Thomas, each light stand had two SB-900 speed lights mounted on it. This created a hard light on both sides of him. I then positioned a third light stand with two more speed lights shooting through an umbrella just left of the camera as the main fill light.
The images were then brought into Photoshop where I made several adjustments, tweaked the overall look. The 'look' I was trying to achieve was a rough, edgy kind of thing. Some beads of sweat and a Gatorade might have been a good addition. Admittedly, the background was not what I would use if I was to go after this kind of portrait. Let me know what you think.
